How do we market a game?
It's interesting to see how some games became trending not because of their inherent quality (their quality is not a main factor at play). Those games such as Pico Park, Among Us, and ( ) came out of nowhere and became a phenomenon on Twitch. It makes me wonder if bigger studios and franchises put much effort into marketing their game. Below are a summary of my findings.
The video game industry
The video game industry is a popular and profitable industry with a global revenue of $154.6 billion projected for 2021, and the number is speculated to increase. China is the biggest market with the largest turnover of $49.3 billion in 2021 and is estimated to reach $71.2 billion in 2025. Next up is the US and third is Japan.
Market characteristics
The first thing at hand is the market itself. Depending on the segmentation, every market must have some unique characteristics that makes it favorable to specific marketing strategies. Some factors to consider are age span, habits, interests and attitudes, devices used for gaming, and so on.
